Easter weekend in the Cotswolds
For easter this year, we had some visitors from SA: our ex-neighbors from the farm! Heinrich, Andrea and their kids Antje and Ricks. First things first was to paint and fill the eggs. Lovely pink and purple as you can see! 
On Saturday, 22nd March, we headed towards Warwick in the Cotswolds. This was our first stop and we stayed at the very old Charter House guest house. This is a 15th century grade 2 listed property and all of the walls and floors are skew! 
Thinus and I slept in the Kingmaker room, which as you can see is decorated in a very old world style! The next morning was Easter and it had snowed!! Can you believe it - everything covered in white for Easter. It should have been Christmas instead! 
After an early breakfast, we went to church in the St. Mary's Cathedral. St Mary's was founded in 1123 by the Earl of Warwick. 
After the service, we headed back to the guest house for some Easter egg hunting! Sadly by now most of the snow had already melted, but there was definitely some left to add a contrast to the eggs and lindt bunnies! As you can see - Andrea had some fun looking for them! 
Then it was time to go to Warwick castle. They had a themed weekend - "The great battle for Warwick Castle". 
This meant people dressing up and us getting in to the spirit of things! From the ugly people playing music, to us getting tied in to the docks! 
There were loads of people - they'd put up tents, had fires going, did little dances and then had the 2 sides warring for the crown of the castle. 
Inside the castle they had the royal weekend party exhibition of 1898 where Daisy (the Countess of Warwick) hosted a weekend party at which the principle guests were the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII and Winston Churchill! They had wax statues and the rooms were decked out in their original splendour! 
After touring the inside, the festivities outside continued, with the start of the big competition. Must say - am glad tights are no longer a fashion trend for men! Then it was down to the river where the trebuchet was shot. Goodness, this thing is huge and must have made battles quite the difficult and slow thing to do! 
Then a falconry show, which was also enjoyable - almost got my head taken off once as the birds swoop really low over the crowds. And the birds are huge! Definitely not something you want to be carried off by! 
Yes, there definitely was much to do at the castle! Time to climb up the tower and walk along the wall. 
But then it was about time to go and explore the rest of the Cotswolds. We went to Stratford-upon-Avon which is Shakespeare's birth place. Had a walk through the streets and looked at the house he was born. 
And then off to check in to our B&B near Stow-on-the-Wold. 
For dinner that night we went to the Fox inn. Had a really nice evening and a good time with the Eggers' family! Here you can see (f.l.t.r.) Ricks, Thinus, me, Andrea, Antje and Heinrich. 
Sadly then it was time to say goodbye to them as they headed off to Bath the next day, whilst we had to head off home! 
The next day Thinus and I took all the little back roads through the many pretty towns! Alas, that was it - Easter weekend over! At least it was a good break from work, and we had a good time driving through the countryside. This is one of the prettiest areas of England and we'll definitely go back in summer!
